September 21,1967 Swicegood Named Davie 'Draft Stickley' Head SALISBURY - Philip Kirk, Chairman of the Young Republican division of the Draft Stickley for Governor Com mittee, announced today the ap pointment of Jerry Swicegood, Mocksville, as Davie County Chairman of the Young Republican Co mmittee Chairman for Stickley. At 24 Swicegood is the youngest coun ty commissioner in North Carolina. He was 23 at the time of his election. He is a real estate broker, owns a farm, is an insurance salesman and a grocer. (Staff Pfceto) $72,000 Project Started A Davie County resident, who failed to obtain a high school diploma, may earn it at the Davie County Education Cen ter. That opportunity is one of many offered by the Center which began operation last June under a $72,000 federal grant The grant was established un der Title 111 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and it enables the Education Center to project imaginative solutions to educational prob lems. The multi-phased project, con ducted by the Center, offers adult education classes, remedial reading programs, student and adult art classes, educational movies for adults, discussion groups, public speaking classes, listening and viewing research area, curriculum materials dis play room and a kindergarten program. Future courses may include classes in photography, creating writing, modem math for par ents, speed reading, and some vocational classes depending upon the public's response to the courses. Charles J. Wells is project director. Other members of the staff are Lorin Mixon, ait in structor; Mary Sexton, summer reading instructor; Linda Price Odom, secretary; and Charles Williams, technician.
